#WednesdayWords – G is for…

This is the next post in the #WednesdayWords weekly series where I will bring you some wonderful words every Wednesday.

There will be 5 words each week.  One of the 5 will have a connection to reading, writing or language in general. Some you may have heard of but I am also hoping to bring you some that you don’t know.

G is for

Gemination – the doubling of a consonant or the immediate repetition of a word, phrase or clause for rhetorical effect

Glyptography – the art of engraving on gems

Gnomonics – measuring time with a sundial

Graminology – the study of grasses.

and

Geology -the study of rocks and other substances that make up the earth’s surface.

Did you know…

  1. The rock formation in the video is approximately 300 million years old – these are on the north west coast of Cornwall
  2. There are three types of rocks: igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic.
  3. Igneous rocks are volcanic and form from molten material.
  4. Sedimentary rocks are formed from the eroded parts of other rocks. It is in these rocks that fossils are usually found.
  5. Metamorphic rocks have been subjected to extreme pressure or heat and have been transformed.
